Service Resume
William Kent Young- 523 North Loomis Avenue, Fort Collins CO 80521 970-227-1267 eMail: Young.Kent@gMail.com
Objectives: To work in a field which will make full advantage of my long honed skills and experience.
Professional Profile:
30 Years in the Chimney Sweeping/ Wood Stove industry. Daily contact with customers and suppliers. This is an industry which has changed. Due to those changes I have implemented new skills and services and added to my knowledge. My duties included marketing, setting appointments, fulfilling customer expectations.
Many of my skills also involve following various codes, NFPA or UBC. Lightning protection is not covered in the electrical code but a separate NFPA code which I studied and learned thoroughly. I had an HVAC license which I have since let lapse. I used the license to install gas logs and run new gas pipe. I have done radon abatement and was unable to compete because my competitors rarely follow the code for this. I do masonry work specializing in tuck pointing and stucco plastering.
Education:
Two years of college and various industry seminars. Gas welding course at FRCC. Public speaking course. Ironically I learned the chimney sweeping profession from books and manuals.
Summary of Experience:
Installation
Wood Stoves, Fireplaces- both wood and gas, Furnace Chimneys, Pipe fitting, Lightning Protection Systems, Gutter repair, Skylights, Roof vents, Radon abatement systems, Dryer vents, Bathroom vents, Whole house fans, Rebuilding roof soffits, Door & Window setting, General remodeling, Whole house vacuum systems Restaurant vinyl booth upholstery.
Maintenance
Chimney cleaning and servicing, Dryer vent cleaning and replacement, Gutter cleaning, Window cleaning, Office cleaning, Radon abatement.
I read blueprints and manuals and am able to figure out the best way to install systems in older homes.
Customer Service
Marketing my services and scheduling appointments for work. Problem solving. Speaking to various service groups.
Customer education has been the most important part of my job over the years. In an industry such as the chimney industry many people have no idea how their system is built or functions. People move and leave a wood stove in the house with no instruction manual. Many customers tell me they would have paid my price just for the education.
Customer loyalty has been the reason I have been able to stay in business this long. I have some customers who made me promise I would continue to service their systems even if I give up the business. I have watched many of my loyal customer's children grow up and go off to college or get married. I have also sell various items relating to whichever service I am performing.
Vehicles & Tools:
I have a Dodge van and a Chevrolet Step-van which I turned into a rolling shop. I have many hand and power tools including air tools. Portable industrial sewing machine. I can do just about any job on site.
Avocation...
I have worked with computers since 1981. I got a Macintosh the year it was introduced because I could use it to draw. I have been a graphic artist and sculpture since school. I just never found a way to make a livilng from my talents. I m now seeking to put some of the talents I have developed over the years to good use.
I am a self taught web designer. My first website was for my business. I was the first Chimney Sweep in the state. I started that business in 1975. The Chimney business was booming at that time and I soon learned to install woodstoves and chimneys. I formed a solid reputation with Insurance adjusters and got a lot of work rebuilding burnt out chimneys.
It got to a point where I was so busy that I sold off part of the business and remained with an installation and repair service. The man I sold my business to became a good friend and I started using him on some of my bigger insurance jobs. He had not been interested in the repair side of the business but when he worked with me for a while he became interested. He started taking on jobs and using me to help. Soon we were working together often. He had a Window Cleaning service and since I had started out my business life cleaning offices in Denver and moving to Ft Collins to do the same I started working with him in his business. We eventually decided to work together thus reducing our advertising budget by half.
I built the website CapriServices.com which is no longer active but will have it up for an example soon. Since we did many things besides chimneys and windows we need a way of telling present and future customers about what we offered. We got quite a few customers from it and were able to advertise the different services we performed.
The site you are on is one I built for a guy who eventually defaulted on payment. I took all the photographs and manipulated them in Photoshop. I am proficient in Photoshop and like to play with it. When I'm working with it it doesn't feel like work at all.
I have been an ISP and spent over a year as a tech for web development in an internet live chat room. I have bought and sold on eBay for 10 years. I have developed my own templates for auctions.
